Day #1 of the Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE Team Summit covered what the teams can expect as they work toward the Stage Competitions. Before teams can participate in the Stage Competitions, they must pass the judging of three technical deliverable periods.
The first competition deliverable period occurs on December 15, 2009. By this date, Qualified Teams are to submit very detailed reports on their energy storage & high voltage system (if applicable), fueling system, powertrain, body and chassis system and safety and FMVSS compliance.
The second deliverable period closes January 30, 2010. This deliverable requires a great deal of physical evidence from the teams. Specifically, they must show progress and implementation of high voltage safety items (if applicable), progress of vehicle construction and component integration, evidence that the chassis is fully complete and evidence that the vehicle is operating under its own power.
The third and final deliverable period before the Competition Stages ends on March 30, 2010. By this time, Qualified Teams must show competition readiness. They must supply video reporting of their vehicle, its operations and its performance.
Qualified Teams that do not comply with Technical Deliverable progress report deadlines, or that do not address items as directed by the organizers, may face disqualification from the Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE competition.
P.T. Jones, Senior Advisor, Competition Operations, was then introduced to discuss fuel, fuel tanks and quick disconnects for the competition. The primary fuel selections that have been locked in for the competition include gasoline, E85, CNG – compressed natural gas and B20 (biodiesel). Teams must use removable fuel tanks in the competition so that they can be detached and weighed to ensure that the consumption measurements are accurate.
